In this project, we were faced with the challenge of choosing a dilemma within a public city resource and in it’s function and how it’s users interacted that could be solved through better design.

I chose my city’s public library. The first thought that came to mind when considering this building was the difficulty many have in navigating libraries and finding books with ease and speed.

LIBRARY DESIGN SOLUTIONS

For my concept, I came up with two ideas to seek to resolve this problem.

Part I: Icon Design

Part II: Designed Signage

Part III: Library Account App

Part I

The first part of this project was designing unique icons that could be used for defining each genre of books. I decided I wanted the icons to match the weight of the used typeface, Inter, so I designed Illustrator vectors displaying symbols that would infer the content of the different genres while maintaining a consistent style.

Part III

The second part to this project was designing an app that would give users a way to create an account, search for books and be routed to their location in the library as well as explore other books within the library collection.

Please note: the Figma link displays a task flow showing the general concept of how a user could search for a book as well as display the overall layout of how the app could be set up. This prototype is not meant to be a full UI build.

The concept of the app is that it works as both a map for users to find books in a more timely manner and with more ease but also to discover more books, read reviews of recommended books, use their account to keep track of checked out books as well as creating wishlists of book they would like to check out.

I used the same branding elements the signage had with engaging icons and colors. My aim was to make the app easy to navigate and engaging to further the experience of the user and even entice them to use the app more for a more enriched library going experience!

Part II

The first part of this project was in signage. Through the use of fun, and engaging marking signs to help distinguish book genres and sections markers, the user will have an easier time navigating themselves around the library.
